1. A Bad Smell

One of the most tell-tale signs that you need to replace your toilet seal ring is a bad smell. If your toilet smells like sewage regardless of how many times you scrub the floors or spray air fresheners, it is time you look for the source of the smell. More often than not, you'll find that the odor will be emanating from underneath the toilet bowl itself.

2. Water around the Base of the Toilet Bowl

Now that you're probably on your hands and knees sniffing around your toilet if you've followed # 1 above, you should also touch the floor, specifically the area around the base of the toilet bowl. The presence of moisture or water is a sign of a toilet seal leaking, but don't panic just yet. It can also just be condensation. If you do find any moisture or water, proceed to # 3.

3. A Moving Toilet Bowl

One of the ways you'll know that it's time to replace your toilet seal ring is when the bowl moves. Even a slight movement is a bad sign. What you should do is to hold the bowl firmly, and then give it a good, strong shake. Ideally, the bowl should not budge at all. If it does, and even if it's just a slight movement, you need your wax seal replaced.

In case the toilet is located on an upper floor in your house, you should check the ceiling directly beneath where the toilet is, to see if there is any water dripping, or if there are traces of water on the ceiling already. Keep in mind that these can lead to molds which are something you wouldn't want in your home.
